CELPIP Writing Task 2 Samples with Answers

These CELPIP Writing Task 2 samples with answers show how to choose an option in a survey and defend it. In Task 2 you have about 26 minutes to write 150–200 words. There is no correct choice — you are scored on how well you support the option you pick.

Sample 1 — City spending survey

26 minutes · 150–200 words

Prompt

Your city council has funds to improve one public space. Which should they fund? Choose one option and explain your choice.

  • Option A: Upgrade the downtown public library
  • Option B: Build a new park with sports facilities

Model answer — ~CELPIP 10

I strongly believe the council should invest in upgrading the downtown public library rather than building a new sports park.

First, a library serves everyone. Children, students, job seekers and seniors all use it, regardless of age or fitness, whereas sports facilities mainly benefit those who are already active. Second, our current library is overcrowded and its computers are outdated; many residents rely on them for schoolwork and job applications they cannot do at home.

While a new park would be pleasant, the city already has several green spaces. A modern library, by contrast, would fill a real gap in access to information and quiet study space. For these reasons, I firmly support funding the library.

States the choice in the very first sentence — no ambiguity.

Two developed reasons, each with specific support.

Acknowledges the other option, then rebuts it — a higher-band move.

Sample 2 — Workplace policy survey

26 minutes · 150–200 words

Prompt

Your company is deciding on a new work arrangement. Which do you prefer? Choose one option and explain your choice.

  • Option A: Work from the office five days a week
  • Option B: A hybrid schedule (some days at home)

Model answer — ~CELPIP 9

In my opinion, the company should adopt a hybrid schedule rather than requiring everyone in the office five days a week.

To begin with, a hybrid arrangement improves productivity. Employees can do focused tasks at home without constant interruptions, while still coming in for meetings and teamwork. In addition, it saves time and money on commuting, which makes staff happier and less likely to leave — a real benefit for the company.

I understand that full-time office work can strengthen collaboration, and some jobs do need it. However, a hybrid model keeps those in-person benefits on office days while adding flexibility on the others. For these reasons, I believe a hybrid schedule is the better choice for both the company and its employees.

Clear position up front, then two reasons (productivity, retention).

Uses linking words — 'to begin with', 'in addition', 'however'.

Concedes the opposing view and answers it, showing balance.

Sample 3 — School survey

26 minutes · 150–200 words

Prompt

A local high school has money for one new program. Which should it choose? Choose one option and explain your choice.

  • Option A: A coding and technology program
  • Option B: An arts and music program

Model answer — ~CELPIP 10

If the school can fund only one program, I believe it should choose the coding and technology program.

Most importantly, technology skills are increasingly essential for future jobs. Learning to code teaches students problem-solving and logical thinking that apply far beyond computers, and it opens doors to well-paid careers many families could not otherwise reach. Furthermore, a technology program can be shared widely; a single computer lab can serve hundreds of students across many subjects.

I value the arts, and I recognise they support creativity and well-being. Even so, students can pursue music outside school more easily than they can access proper coding instruction and equipment. For this reason, I support the technology program as the wiser investment.

Commits to one option and never wavers.

Reasons go beyond the obvious (transferable skills, wide reach).

Respectful concession to the arts, then a clear reason to prefer coding.
