Prompt
You recently bought a household appliance that stopped working after a week. Write an email to the store manager. In your email:
- explain what you bought and when
- describe the problem
- say what you would like the store to do
Model answer — ~CELPIP 10
Dear Store Manager,
I am writing about a microwave oven I purchased from your King Street location on June 3. Although it worked at first, it stopped heating completely after only one week of normal use.
When I turn it on, the light and turntable still work, but the food comes out cold no matter how long it runs. I have not dropped it or spilled anything inside, so I believe it is a manufacturing fault. I still have my receipt and the original packaging.
As the microwave is only a week old and clearly defective, I would like a full refund or a replacement of the same model. Could you please let me know how to arrange this? I can bring the unit to the store this week at a convenient time.
Thank you for your help.
Sincerely, Daniel Okoye

Prompt
Your city council has funds to improve one public space. Which should they fund? Choose one option and explain your choice.
- Option A: Upgrade the downtown public library
- Option B: Build a new park with sports facilities
Model answer — ~CELPIP 10
I strongly believe the council should invest in upgrading the downtown public library rather than building a new sports park.
First, a library serves everyone. Children, students, job seekers and seniors all use it, regardless of age or fitness, whereas sports facilities mainly benefit those who are already active. Second, our current library is overcrowded and its computers are outdated; many residents rely on them for schoolwork and job applications they cannot do at home.
While a new park would be pleasant, the city already has several green spaces. A modern library, by contrast, would fill a real gap in access to information and quiet study space. For these reasons, I firmly support funding the library.
